Item 5: Objectives of the Durban Review Conference

During the first and second days of the Preparatory Committee of the Durban Review Conference the following list of speakers took the floor to share their orientation about the objectives which the Durban Review Conference will have to pursue.

The following country’s representatives and intergovernmental and non-governmental organizations took the floor (in chronological order): Portugal, Brazil, South Africa, Egypt, Norway, Turkey, Tunisia, Senegal, Morocco, Islamic Republic of Iran, Algeria, Belgium, Syrian Arab Republic, India, Commission Nationale Consultative des droits de l’homme- France, Binai Birth International. Coordinating Board of Jewish Organizations, European Rome Rights Centre, Amnesty International, Join Statement. Indian Movement “Tupay Amaru”. World peace Council, Joint Statement. World Alliance of Young Men’s Christian Association. Pax Romana, joint statement. International Youth and Student Movement for the United nations. Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom. Union of Arab Jurists. Association of World Citizens.

And more: Iceland, Netherlands, Mexico, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Russian Federation, Nigeria, Argentina, Chile, France, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Ligue Internationale contre le Racisme et l’Antisemitisme, Mouvement pour l’abolition de la prostitution et de la pornographie.

Before their statements the President of the Committee, in order to identify the objectives of the Durban Review Conference, affirmed the importance to consider paragraph 33 of General Assembly resolution 61/ 149 of 19 December 2006 in which the Assembly decides to convene in 2009 a review conference on the implementation of the Durban Declaration and programme of Action and paragraph 6 of Human Rights Council resolution 3/2 of 8 December 2006 in which the Council decides that the Durban Review Conference will concentrate on the implementation of the Durban Declaration and Programme of Action, including further actions, initiatives and practical solutions for combating all the contemporary scourges of racism.
