Introduction of report of the Secretary-General on the integrated and coordinated implementation of and follow-up to the major UN conferences and summits by Mr. Sarbuland Khan
Poverty, gender, disease, financial development, environmental sustainability, and social development goals need to be addressed and followed up after UN conferences. Since 1995, ECOSOC has had an integrated follow up with first, improving roads and water sources which are directly linked to an improvement in education. Second, ECOSOC has worked to improve the architectural components of the ECOSOC system itself. However improvements still must be made and there is a need to realign the functional and regional commissions with new functions of the council; review that implementation is in sync with the council; and interact with subsidiary bodies ensuring creative options. If it is possible to meet the MDGs, the goals must be pursued in an integrated manner, bringing in a wide range of actors and ensure system-wide coherence at the country level.
Representative of Finland, speaking on behalf of the EU
The remarks were based on Item 6 and 8 but also Item 6a, whereby the EU is committed to principle of national ownership, donor coordination, and programs by partner countries. Developing countries must enable a domestic environment suitable to promote development. EU would like to find solutions for those unsustainable countries and emphasize that developed nations have, for example ensuring aid effectiveness, a role to play. The EU would like to promote those countries in the middle—they need to be concentrated on as well.
